Belgrade High School Principal Kevin McNelis suffered minor injuries Monday morning while confronting a former substitute teacher in a school hallway, police said.

The controntation turned violent and the man struck McNelis after being asked to leave, Chief of Police E.J. Clark said. Officers responded to the school and apprehended the man, who was not identified. He was taken to Hope House in Bozeman, and later transferred to another mental health facility.

Clark said he did not know what prompted the incident and McNelis was unavailable for comment Monday and Tuesday. No charges have been filed in the case, which remains under investigation.
