The somewhat neglected juniper bushes in the Belgrade City Hall parking lot will be removed this month for safety and aesthetic reasons, following City Council approval this week.
City Manager Ted Barkley said that employees of several downtown businesses have expressed concerns about decreased visibility and shadows cast by the bushes, which are located across the street from the Mercantile building. The bushes aren’t particularly beautiful, Barkley said, so it was decided that removing them might be for the best.
Barkley brought the matter before the council just to be make sure that none of the bushes had been planted for memorial or other forgotten reasons.
Alternative landscaping and decorative gravel likely will put in the place of the bushes after they are taken out.
“It is a chance to spruce the parking lot up a bit while creating a safer space for downtown employees,” Barkley said.
