In these times, when our government actively ignores the threat of climate change, it’s important to notice the small victories.

Last week there was a House vote on an amendment to the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) that would have altered the bill’s phrasing so that “climate change is a direct threat to the national security of the United Sates” would no longer be included. This would have been an alarming change and thankfully it was voted down.

Although it’s great that this bill was voted down, of course it’s also ridiculous that this was up for a vote. The Pentagon has been warning of climate change’s threat to national security for many years and the Secretary of Defense acknowledges that even today our military preparedness is threatened by it. So our governmental institutions and bipartisan Congress is awake to the reality of climate change (at least to some extent) and are not yet completely under the thumb of the corporate polluters, as our administration is.

So that’s one small victory anyway.
