Up And Over

Three Forks sophomore Morgan Allen clears the bar while competing in the high jump Tuesday at the Bozeman Invitational. She won the event at 5-feet, 1-inch.

BOZEMAN — Lindsey Benson not only qualified for the state Class C track meet in May, she also had a personal best throw in the shot put Tuesday afternoon at the Bozeman Invitational at Van Winkle Stadium.

“Lindsey had a PR throw and just absolutely killed it in the shot put to take second place,” Christian coach Nate TeSlaa said.

The Manhattan Christian senior just barely qualified for state with a throw of 35-feet, 8.25-inches. The qualifying mark for Class C girls is 35-3. Now, the pressure is off.

“I’m so excited,” said Benson. “I was really happy that it happened early in the season. It takes a lot of pressure off. It’s definitely a burden off my shoulders.”

Benson got some advice from Manhattan’s throws coach, Jen Allen, after the event.

Personal Best Heave

Manhattan Christian senior Lindsay Benson heaves the shot put en route to a personal best Tuesday at the Bozeman Invitational.

“She teaches all of the Manhattan kids the spin. So it helps me with my spin,” Benson explained.

Benson also placed third in the discus with a throw of 89-feet, 5-inches.

Bozeman won the meet, scoring 388.3 points, followed by Ennis with 85.2 points. Christian had 57 points for third, followed by Three Forks 55.5, Manhattan 47, Willow Creek 22.

Manhattan won the Sheridan Invitational last Saturday in Dillon, edging conference rival Townsend, 83-82. Three Forks was fifth with 48 points.

For most of the Class B and C teams they were coming off of the meet on Saturday, so some athletes did not run in all of their events. And, Manhattan and Three Forks will participated in another meet Friday in Belgrade.

“I know that Manhattan didn’t run all of their crew,” Three Forks coach Tracey Welter noted.

Christian’s Alex Veltkamp also barely qualified for state in the 400, posting a time of 1:01.32. She ran a 1:01.98 in Dillon. The state qualifying time in the event is 1:01.33, and she won both events as well as the 800 at both meets.

“She’s a great athlete,” said TeSlaa. “I thought all of the kids did great. We have a pretty young tem this year. We have a lot of freshmen and sophomores. We’re starting to see some good times.

“The hardest part, it was a quick turn around from Dillon on Saturday and Bozeman on Tuesday. But everybody was dealing with that.”

Welter also saw some good times and marks from her squad.

“My girls are doing well. We’re pretty well rounded with girls in each event,” she said. “We have had two qualify for state. Morgan Allen and Sinclair Oliver.”

Allen won the high jump, clearing the bar at 5-feet, 1-inch to win the event on Tuesday to qualify for state. Oliver qualified for state on Saturday in the long jump, leaping 16-feet, 6-inches.

Alexa Arthun scored 50 of the Tigers’ points in Dillon, winning the 110 and 300 hurdles, the 100-meter dash, long jump and pole vault. Manhattan swept the pole vault with Cassidy McCarthy, Emma Wass, and Quinn Schmidt following Arthun.

Arthun won the 100 hurdles Tuesday in limited action at the meet.

“We have some great leadership from our upperclassmen right now and that leadership set the tone not just for competition but also for expected behavior of teammates,” Manhattan coach John Sillitti said. “The kids competed hard but also did a great job of supporting each other and we had fewer of the little problems that arise early in the season. I credit that to great leadership we have right now.”
