Out In Front

Manhattan sophomore Alex Arthun, center, was well ahead of the competition en route to winning the 100 hurdles Saturday at the Manhattan Invitational.

BOZEMAN — Manhattan’s girls track and field team won its own invitational Saturday at Van Winkle Stadium on a chilly and windy day.

Triple-winner Alexa Arthun led the Tigers, who finished the day with 137.50 points. Townsend followed with 58, while Manhattan Christian was third with 52 and Three Forks placed sixth with 31 points.

While winning the meet is satisfying, really it matters little to the team at this point of the season. Athletes just wanted to improve their times and marks.

“We’re just trying to get better,” Arthun, a hurdler and jumper said. “We’re working on just improving our PR’s and stuff like that.”

Teammate Mariah Harvey, who won two throwing events, agreed.

“We just have to keep focusing on our technique and eventually it will come together,” she said. “Now that all of the distractions of basketball and everything is out of the way we can focus on track. That’s exciting.”

Arthun won the 100 and 300 hurdles as well as the pole vault. She won the pole vault event for the second time this year and in the process broke the school record.

Arthun had set the mark the previous week at 9-feet, 7-inches at the Valley Meet in Bozeman. She vaulted 10-feet on Saturday.

Arthun was trying to clear the bar at 10-feet, 3-inches, but could not get cleanly over the bar while vaulting into some pretty stiff gusts of wind.

“Hopefully the wind won’t be as bad the next meet,” she said. “It’s rough.”

In the hurdles, Arthun posted winning times of 15.45 in the 100’s and 47.12 seconds in the 300’s.

“My hurdle times are getting faster each race, which I’m happy about that,” Arthun said. “I had good competition. I just hope I can keep getting faster.”

Arthun was pushed in both hurdle races by Aubry Bair of Townsend and Janessa Williams of Jefferson. Williams was second in the 100s and third in the 300’s, while Bair was third in the 100 hurdles and second in the 300’s.

Arthun also finished second in the long jump and third in the triple jump.

“Mentally it’s hard to get into it,” Arthun noted. “Long jump can be a little frustrating. You scratch a good jump and that throws you off.”

Harvey won the discus (117-7.50) and shot put (38-10.75).

“It was season best for shot, but I struggled a little in discus,” Harvey said. “I just have to keep working on that.”

Harvey beat Jefferson’s Becky Gerst in the shot put. The two have been battling back and forth this season.

“She’s been throwing pretty good. It’s good competition,” said Harvey.

Brooke Jones was second in both events, throwing the discus 106-feet, 7-inches and heaving the shot put 34-feet, 5-50-inches. The senior also placed sixth in the javelin. Jones ran a leg on the 4x400 relay as well, which won with a time of 4:38.59.

Manhattan’s 4x100 relay placed second with a time of 54.71.

Kennedy Grubich was second in the javelin for the Tigers. The junior went 110-feet, 2-inches, but Harrison’s Britt Cooper had a throw of 119-feet, 3-inches to win the event.

Manhattan freshman Hannah Madsen was second in the 3,200 with a time of 13:42.58. Teammate Jordan Wyse followed with a time of 13:52.68.

Nikki Aiken and Alex Veltkamp led the Eagles with two wins each. Aiken won the 1,600 with a time of 5:44.50 and the 3,200 with a time of 12:41.37. Emma Adams finished fourth in the 3,200.

“They’re getting more excited about being out here. And they’re competing, they are seeing how to line up against their competitor,” Christian coach Erika Kimm said. “They are pushing themselves pretty hard. They are getting ready for that top 10 meet. They want to qualify for that.”

The annual Top 10 Meet will be held April 28 in Laurel.

Veltkamp won the 400 and 800. She ran a time of 1:01.75 in the 400 and a 2:37.47 in the 800.

“My 800 time was a little slow,” said Veltkamp. “I was a little disappointed in that. But my 400 time was pretty good.”

“She has a ton of potential,” noted Kimm. “We just have to get her to be more confidence in herself.”

Like many of the teams, Christian was not at full strength due to a district music festival as well as injuries.

Three Forks also competed with a skeleton crew, but many of the team members participated in the Belgrade JV meet held on Friday.

Morgan Allen won the high jump for the third straight meet, clearing 5-feet. She also ran a leg on the Wolves’ sprint relay team, which won in 54.25 seconds.

Sinclair Oliver was fourth in the 200 with a time of 28.53 seconds, while Cassidy Keltner was sixth with a time of 29.16 seconds. Oliver was also fifth in the 100 meter dash.

Three Forks travels to Anaconda today for another meet at 11:30 a.m. The Wolves, along with Christian and Manhattan, will be in Belgrade for the Gallatin Valley Invitational on Saturday.
