Late Tag

Belgrade’s Mason Jacobson tries to apply the tag as Emmanuel’s Max Wohlgenent slides safley into the bag following a passed ball Saturday.

Johnny Graham didn’t mince words. Belgrade’s coach was disappointed in the effort put forth by his team Saturday at Medina Field.

The Bandits split their games at the annual Boys of Summer Invitational and failed to reach the final day of the four-day tournament after finishing with a 2-2 record.

Belgrade (20-8-1) lost to South Fremont American Legion, which is based out of St. Anthony, Idaho, 4-2, and then capped the day with an 11-5 victory against Emmanuel.

“Today, I don’t even know what to say about today. I thought today was lackluster,” Graham said. “Certainly in Game 1. They bounced back better in Game 2, but we got to keep growing and maturing.”

On The Mound

Belgrade’s Marcos Verdeja delivers a pitch Saturday during a 4-2 defeat against South Fremont.

Cody (Wyoming) finished with a 4-0 record to reach Sunday’s championship game and will play either NW Premier or South Fremont, which will met in the morning’s semifinal after each posted a 3-1 record.

While the Bandits have an unexpected day off, Graham noted his team will be back at the field Sunday morning to work on the mental aspect of the game.

“Tomorrow we’re going to get this thing (the field) ready and then we’re going to spend some time up in the classroom and see if we can’t take advantage of learning from mistakes,” he said. “I would rather be playing, obviously, but this is also the time of year that if we were playing tomorrow we’re taking Monday off and then we’re playing again Tuesday. Practice days to improve in anything are few and far between, so yeah, we’ll take advantage of it tomorrow and hopefully learn something.”

Belgrade began the tournament Thursday with a 10-1 loss to NW Premier, a select team from Post Falls, Idaho. The Bandits faced their ace, Jack McDonald, who tossed a 1-hitter and struck out six in five-plus innings of work.

NW Premier tallied 10 hits, including a double by McDonald, en route to rallying from an early first inning deficit to win the contest.

“They pressure you as an offense,” Graham noted. “I really like how they play.”

The Bandits bounced back Friday to beat Laurel 7-6, but Graham wasn’t happy with how the team closed out the game after building a 5-0 lead. The Dodgers scored three runs in both the sixth and seventh innings to get within one.

Brandhorst Scores

Belgrade’s Isaiah Brandhorst slides safely across home plate as Emmanuel Halos catcher Cael Ricci fields the throw Saturday at Medina Field. Belgrade won the contest 11-5 to cap the Boys of Summer Invitational with a 2-2 record.

“We had a chance to finish that game and we just didn’t. I thought we got real comfortable up here,” Graham, pointing to his head, said. “Next thing you know it’s a game and tightened up real quick.”

In order to finish in the top three and advance to Sunday, the Bandits needed two win twice on Saturday. But South Fremont took a quick 3-0 lead and then Kyler Yancey tossed a 3-hitter to shut down the Bandits.

Belgrade competed without three starters — Seth Green, Easton Page and Brandon Matthews — who were given a rare day off.

“But I like to think we’re deep enough that the lineup we put out both games today can go compete with whoever they’re playing,” said Graham. “That first game, they just seemed like they had no interest in even playing the game and that’s odd. Especially for some kids that haven’t played a ton lately, that’s typically the last think you’re begging for is effort when you name is called.”

The Bandits finished with just 10 hits on the day, and Kash Fike had the lone extra base hit with a double against Emmanuel.

“I really like this group of guys. I think they can achieve great things,” said Graham. “But it’s a long effort, a long process.”

The Bandits bounced back on Tuesday by routing the Butte Miners in a Southern A doubleheader on the road. Coby Richards scattered four hits on the mound and hit a home run at the plate to lead the team to a 10-1 victory in the opener, while Matthews was 5 for 5 in Game 2 with a pair of doubles and three RBI’s in a 13-2 win.

Belgrade (22-8-1, 7-1) is back in action Friday hosting a four-game series against Mount Spokane (Washington).

“It’s a triple A club from Spokane,” noted Graham. “They’re from Mount Spokane High School. They’re coming over for a four-game series, and they would be very competitive double A team in our state if they were over here. They’re good, they have some good arms.

“That will be awesome to have back to back days and doubleheaders against a team like that.”
