Bandits

There was a bit of a misstep on Friday, followed by a rain out on Saturday, but it did little to slow down the Belgrade Bandits over the weekend at Pirtz Baseball Field.

The Bandits finished unbeaten en route to winning the Buffalo Wild Wings Tournament in Billings. Belgrade posted a 3-0-1 record, which included a 13-1 rout of Cheyenne, Wyo. in the championship game.

“All in all, I’m happy with the tournament,” Bandits manager Johnny Graham said. “We won the thing, which is obviously what you are trying to do. We started it and we ended it very well.”

Belgrade (16-6-1) began the four-day tournament with a 10-8 victory against Vauxhall on Thursday. Brandon Matthews hit a triple and Coby Richards a double in the win.

The Bandits tied the Billings Cardinals 6-6 (tournament time limit) to begin Friday, and then capped the day with a 13-4 victory against Glendive. Easton Page homered against Billings, while Cole Thomas was 4 for 5 with a pair of doubles against Glendive.

But Graham wasn’t thrilled with his team’s performance following Thursday’s win.

“I thought we played really well Thursday. Today and Thursday, both days were similar with how we played,” he said. “Friday was an outlier. Friday was just slow and that was the day that we tied Billings and beat Glendive.”

Belgrade still managed to win its pool, and after Saturday’s contests were rained out, it was placed into the championship game as the lone team without a loss in the tournament. Cheyenne and Vauxhall both finished 2-1 in the other pool, but Cheyenne won the tie-breaker.

Belgrade dominated the title game, scoring three runs in the first and six more in the second en route to victory. Richards set the tone on the mound, while Cooper VanLuchene was 2 for 2 at the plate with a double.

“We swung the bats really well. Coby Richards threw really well,” said Graham. “I thought we hustled really well. We played fast, we played hard and really played like we cared, which obviously makes it a lot more fun.”

The Bandits return to action Tuesday hosting the Helena Reps in a conference doubleheader beginning at 5 p.m.
