Stokke Returns

Belgrade’s Hanna Stokke returns the ball during a volley Friday afternoon at the Anderson Tennis Courts. The senior went 2-1 in matches as the Panthers hosted Billings West, Billings Skyview and Butte.

Belgrade’s tennis teams have had a tough non-conference schedule to begin the spring, and it continued Friday against three Class AA programs.

The Panthers hosted Billings West, Billings Skyview and Butte at the Belgrade Youth Sports Complex. While neither the boys nor girls posted a dual victory, there were a handful of wins in singles and doubles action.

“Playing these three AA schools we have seen in the last few weeks was a chance to view our progress and experiment with players in different slots,” Panthers coach Justin Arndt said. “We’ve made progress in leaps and bounds, and some of our experiments had great results.”

The only downside came in the first dual of the day as Billings West swept all of the matches — boys and girls. Several of the matches were close, however.

Cady Returns

Belgrade’s Abbey Cady eyes a return Saturday during a doubles match at the Anderson Tennis Courts.

Hanna Stokke won the first set against Raelynn Bruyere, but lost the next two 4-6 and 12-14 at No. 1 singles. The senior bounced back to beat Billings Skyview’s Sarah Abeyta 8-1 and then Butte’s Riley Duffy 6-1, 6-3.

Angelina Chandler had Belgrade’s only other singles victory with an 8-6 win against Skyview’s Amine Bailey.

“She’s been working hard all year and finally found paydirt during a tight Skyview match,” said Arndt. “Angelina Chandler has kept a positive attitude and focused on improving all year and it shows in her performance every day.”

Skyview won the dual 6-2, while Butte also posted a 6-2 victory.

The Panthers’ only other victory on the day came from the tandem of Abbey Cady and Elizabeth Gilbertson at No. 3 doubles. The duo beat Butte’s Kennedy Lean and Abby Kelly 6-1, 6-3.

“The senior duo of Elizabeth Gilbertson and Abbey Cady came alive against Butte as well,” said Arndt. “It’s fun to see two lifelong friends experience the joy of tennis together.”

On the boys’ side, Skyview beat the Panthers 7-1, while Butte posted a 5-3 dual win. Belgrade’s Jackson Thorn, Seth Koltz and Dawson Brooks each notched singles victories against Butte.

Thorn held off Aidan Fiancisco for a 6-4, 4-6, 10-5 victory at No. 1 singles following losses to West’s Augustin Veraex and Skyview’s Aidan Binau.

“Jackson Thorn won a hard-fought match against his No. 1 singles counterpart from Butte,” noted Arndt. “Significant progress from last year’s match against him.”

Koltz finished 1-2 on the day at No. 3 singles after beating Butte’s Joe Sandoval 6-3, 6-4, while Dawson Brooks won his lone singles match against Butte’s Ahmed Khalil 6-2, 6-0.

“Seth Koltz powered through his No. 3 singles match versus Butte as well. His commitment and hard work were finally rewarded as he commanded the net and dictated points,” said Arndt. “Dawson Brooks shifted over from No. 1 doubles to No. 4 singles for the second time this year and found his singles footing during the Butte match.”

Backhand Return

Belgrade’s Alexa Dryer returns a backhand Friday afternoon during a doubles match against Billings Skyview.

The Panthers’ only other victory was provided by Quinn Gannon and Austin Hargrove, who beat Skyview’s Adam Nedius and Carson Patridge, 8-4, at No. 3 doubles.

Belgrade was also scheduled to host Great Falls and Great Falls CMR on Saturday, but the duals were canceled due to inclement weather.

The Panthers also traveled to Missoula on Monday for make up duals against Missoula Sentinel and Missoula Big Sky. The boys lost their duals 6-2 and 5-3, respectively, while the girs lost 8-0 and 6-2.

Belgrade’s girls competed without their two captains — Chandler and Stokke — but boasted winners in Alexa Dryer and the doubles team of Cady and Gilbertson. Dreyer beat Big Sky’s Eloise Mitcher 6-0, 6-4, while the doubles team posted a 6-3, 6-1 win against Big Sky’s Nikki Sharkey and Katy Stemple.

“Alexa Dreyer has been moving from singles to doubles the past few weeks and won her singles match in straight sets,” said Arndt. “Her positive attitude and willingness to learn and adapt have helped her improve quickly. She rightly deserved her win today.”

For the boys, Logan McCauley, Koltz and Brooks each posted wins in singles action, while the doubles teams of Coulter Thorn and Hoppe, and Riley Black and Eric Lee, won against Big Sky.

“Coulter Thorn and JD Hoppe found their doubles groove today,” said Arndt. Their aggressive play added another gear to their game.”

Belgrade is back in action Saturday with the boys hosting Park County in Class A action, while the girls will compete against the Rangers in Livingston.

"We are extremely proud of our team," said Arndt. "They handled these tough AA matches through the first part of the season well. Today was the most competitive we’ve been at this level. It was great to see our younger players step up. I think they are now well aware they can compete at this level."
