There were only a handful of wins Saturday in Billings, but Justin Arndt was pleased with what he saw.

Belgrade’s boys and girls lost all three of their duals against Billings Skyview, Billings Senior and Billings West with just two players earning victories.

The girls lost to Skyview 7-1, Senior 8-0, and West 7-1, while the boys lost to Skyview 7-1 and to Senior and West 8-0.

“We had lots of new faces on both the boys and girls teams along with it being our first AA tournament,” Arndt, who is Belgrade’s coach, said. “Our goal was to play hard and we achieved it.”

This spring marks just the fifth season for the Panthers in program history, and Belgrade moves up to Class AA beginning in 2020.

Hanna Stokke, who advanced to state a year ago, notched a pair of victories for the girls competing at No. 1 singles. The senior defeated Skyview’s Chloe Stickney 6-1, 6-1 and West’s Raelynn Bruyere 3-6, 6-3, 10-6.

Stokke’s lone loss of the day was to Senior’s Kirsten Kraske 1-6, 0-6.

The duals served as the first varsity action for much of the team, and despite the losses there were several strong performances.

“We saw some promising doubles play from duo Claire Culbertson and Remi Gordon,” said Arndt. “Maliah Beauchaine battled a close match at singles in her first time seeing varsity play.”

Culberston and Gordon were paired up at No. 2 doubles, losing to West’s Grace Watson and Tia Lind 2-6, 2-6 and to Senior’s Maddie Bach and Madi Pete 0-6, 0-6.

The lone victory on the boys side for the Panthers came from freshman Coulter Thorn, who beat Skyview’s Tyler Pearson 2-6, 7-6, 11-9 at No. 4 singles.

Thorn also teamed up with Dalton Mattson in a 5-7, 3-6 loss to West’s Andrew Kazmirski and Matt Tryan at No. 2 doubles, and with JD Hoppe in a 4-6, 6-1, 6-10 loss to Senior’s Izzy Frenda and Nick Morledge-Hampton at No. 4 doubles.

Jackson Thorn went 0-2 at No. 1 singles, losing to Senior’s Andy Bough 2-6, 0-6 and West’s Augustin Veracy 2-6, 2-6. The senior also lost to Skyview’s Joel Thompson 1-6, 1-6 at No. 2 singles.

Logan McCauley went 0-2 at No. 2 singles and lost to Skyview’s Aiden Binau 0-6, 1-6 at No. 1 singles.

“On the boys’ side newcomers Derek Foster, Riley Black and JD Hoppe showed our future AA division that they are ones to watch,” said Arndt.

All three saw action at doubles during the day, and Foster also competed at No. 4 singles. He lost to Senior’s Joseph Driscall 0-6, 0-6.

Belgrade returns to action at a dual in Bozeman on Friday. Action is slated to begin at 10 a.m.
