Relay Run

Manhattan Christian's Grant Van Dyken competes in the boys 1600-meter relay during the State C track meet at Laurel Sports Complex in Laurel on Saturday.

Ben Morrison forced himself to focus.

Manhattan Christian head coach Laura Arthun discussed Morrison’s running form with him Friday night. He realized had to emphasize his technique especially when he was fatigued.

He executed Saturday. The Eagles junior finished second in the boys 1,600 meters in 4 minutes, 40.1 seconds and finished the Class C meet in Laurel with fifth-place showings in the 800 (2:03, a personal record) and the 3,200 (10:30.25).

“Ben Morrison had a phenomenal race,” Arthun said of the 1,600. “That was an exciting race, and I was so happy to see him run well. He’s been working really hard. … It’s just a culmination of putting all those races together and getting points for the team. He had the best track meet of his life.”

Morrison helped the Christian boys take fourth with 38 points as the girls tied for eighth with 20.

Arthun was happy with Saturday’s performances considering Friday included a dropped baton in one of the boys’ relays, which resulted in a disqualification.

But the Eagles bounced back Saturday. Christian’s 1,600 relay with Jakob Boscha, Devan Walhof, Grant Van Dyken and Caleb Bellach took fourth in 3:35.46, Bellach was third in the triple jump by crossing 42 feet, 8.5 inches and Boscha was fifth in the long jump with a mark of 20-5.25.

“We were disappointed to start,” Arthun said, “but I told our guys we just have to keep fighting and see what we can put together.”

Junior Faith Shepard was key for Christian’s girls. She was runner-up in the pole vault with a personal-record 9-9 and in the long jump with a season-record mark of 16-9. She was also fourth in the 100 in a season-best 13.02 seconds.

“Faith Shepherd had a phenomenal track meet,” Arthun said. “Faith is really a competitor and really gave it her all.”

Triple Jump Champion

Three Forks junior Kendall Lynn stands atop the podium after winning the state triple jump championship for a second consecutive season Saturday in Kalispell.

Lynn repeats in TJ for Three Forks girls

Kendall Lynn is proud of her sister, but she couldn’t let her sibling get away with besting her easily.

Lynn had taken third in the state long jump Friday and watched her younger sister, Keaton, win the title. Lynn was driven to defend her state triple jump championship and set a personal record. But the sibling rivalry boosted her just a little bit more.

“That was a little bit more motivation,” Lynn said with a laugh. “If she got one, I had to get one.”

Lynn went ahead and set a Three Forks record in the triple jump and won her second consecutive championship in the event with a mark of 36 feet, 4.5 inches on Saturday at the Class B meet in Kalispell. The Three Forks girls finished fifth with 57 points and the boys were 11th with 20.

Wolves head coach Tracy Welter said Lynn sped down the runway on her winning run. Lynn felt her approach, which she had been meticulously working on, was dialed in and technically sound.

She simply hoped for a personal record, which she set, and to win. Having won the state title last season as a sophomore, the Wolves junior felt more experienced but still felt compelled by her competition to perform to her maximum potential.

Lynn didn’t know she broke the school record until coaches told her afterward. She was thrilled all the same.

“I feel great,” Lynn said. “Just to get what I’ve been working on the whole year, it felt pretty great.”

Triple jump ended up being a key event for the Wolves. Three Forks senior Payden Lynn recorded a season best 43-10.75 to take runner-up, and senior Bryce Olson closed his career with a personal-best 43-2 for third.

Welter credited jumping coach Brenda Olson, who’s Bryce’s mother, as a key in the event’s success.

Kendall Lynn also set a personal record in the 300-meter hurdles in 48.27 seconds, good for sixth. Senior Paeton Ohs was sixth in the javelin with 116-6, and Owen Long set a personal record with a 6-0 high jump for the Wolves.

“It went really good. I thought everybody was really impressive,” Welter said. “Our kids’ marks were above or at where we expected. It was really a good feeling.”

Severson Runs

Manhattan's Madeline Severson, middle, runs her leg of the 4x400 meter relay Saturday at the State B meet in Kalispell.

Love, Meeker lead Tigers' boys to runner up finish

As Manhattan arrived at the Class B meet Saturday, head coach John Sillitti pulled seniors Zak Meeker and Bryce Love aside and asked them to go for a walk with him.

The trio had been working together for the past six years and knew this would be their final competition as a group.

“I said no matter what, win or lose, I love you guys,” Sillitti recalled. “I just said this is how I want to spend my last day of the season with you guys, win or lose.”

As a light rain fell in Kalispell, Sillitti began breaking down emotionally.

“They swore they were going to give it everything they had," he said.

Entering Saturday in second place, the Manhattan boys only had chances to gain points in the 1,600 meters and 1,600 relay. Meeker and Love were slated to compete in both. After participating in the 800 and 3,200 Friday, both dealt with fatigue.

But the duo remained determined to take home a second-place trophy while Huntley Project ran away with 158 points and the title. The Tigers persevered and accomplished their goal of second by finishing with 68.

“We knew we had to score higher than projected in the mile,” Sillitti said. “We knew our guys were tired from running 800 and 3,200 yesterday. It was just going to come down to gutting it out.”

With limited events to compete in, Manhattan spent most of the day calculating what it would take to place second.

When Love took second in the 1,600 in 4 minutes, 33.98 seconds and Meeker took third in 4:34.95, they were concerned it may not have been enough. But as the meet continued, the Tigers knew the final standings would be decided by the 1,600 relay.

Freshman Michael Swan opened the race by running the best lead leg of his life, Sillitti said, and Love and Meeker ran the second and third legs, respectively. Wyatt Barney, who battled a hip injury all weekend, ran the anchor and struggled to maintain proper form. But Sillitti talked to his runners about gutting out performances and they adhered.

The group placed fourth in the relay, good enough to nab second overall. Sillitti complimented the two seniors because of the way they sacrificed individual results to add more events and lead the team.

“It was just pretty amazing,” Sillitti said. “When it happened, it always feels like it was written that way. I knew how much they wanted it.”

Manhattan’s girls took 13th as a team. Olleca Severson placed fifth in the 100 hurdles in 16.41 seconds, and Hallie Hemenway took fifth in the 3,200 with a personal record of 11:55.65. Madeline Severson (4 feet, 10 inches) placed sixth in high jump and Jodi Cameron (11:56.96, a personal record) came in sixth in the 3,200.
