Safe Slide

Connor Johnson slides safely across home plate as Bitterroot catcher Matt Brown fields the throw to score Gallatin Valley's only run on Saturday. He was knocked in on a double by Ryan Murphy.

The Gallatin Valley Outlaws saved their best for last over the weekend at the state Class A tournament.

While they didn’t bring home a state championship, the Outlaws proved they could compete with anyone in the state at Denton Field in Miles City. They pushed both Glacier and Bitterroot to the limit, and earned a top four finish.

“The boys played very good baseball the last two weeks. Our pitching was great,” longtime Gallatin Valley manager Duwayne Scott said. “We hit really well at the state tourney. Just came up a couple defensive plays short at state. They worked their tails off all year, and it paid off at the end.”

The Outlaws began the tournament with a 15-6 rout of Laurel on Wednesday. Derik DeFrance led the onslaught by going 5-for-5 from the plate with a double and a triple, while Kyle Grevious was 2-for-5 with a double and a homer.

Hunter Johnson, Caleb Kamerman and Gabriel Delgatty combined for a 6-hitter on the hill.

On The Hill

Thomas Carlson tossed a 5-hitter Saturday during Gallatin Valley's 2-1 loss to three-time defending state champion Bitterroot.

On Thursday, Gallatin Valley rallied with a pair of runs in the bottom of the sixth to tie Glacier 2-2. The game went into extra innings and in the eighth the Twins tallied three and then held on to win 5-3.

Michael Jones pitched into the eighth en route to picking up the loss on the mound. Connor Johnson and DeFrance each had two hits.

The Outlaws bounced back to beat Miles City 10-3 on Friday. Michael Nehring tossed a complete game, scattering 11 hits and striking out three, while Ryan Murphy and DeFrance each hit doubles to lead the offense.

Then Gallatin Valley nearly upset three-time defending champion Bitterroot on Saturday. The Outlaws took a 1-0 lead into the sixth before the Red Sox scored twice en route to a 2-1 victory.

Thomas Carlson tossed a 5-hitter and struck out four in keeping the Red Sox off balance.

“Carlson pitched his best game of his career against the Red Sox,” noted Scott. “Nehring, Hunter and Michael Jones threw great games as well.”

Gallatin Valley finishes the season with a 39-26 record, which includes a runner up finish as the Southern A District Tournament.

Glacier halted Bitterroot’s string of championships on Sunday, holding on for an 8-6 victory after taking an 8-0 lead into the sixth.
