The Gallatin Valley Outlaws wrapped up a tough month of travel Sunday in Cody, Wyo.

The Outlaws finished with a 2-2 record at the Cody Lions Club Wood Bat Tournament. It was the fourth and final tournament of the regular season for the road weary team.

“I think our guys are just tired,” longtime Gallatin Valley manager Duwayne Scott said. “So we’re going to take some time off after the game against Butte on Tuesday and let them get their legs back, and hopefully we can finish the month of July strong.”

The Outlaws lost to the Cody to wrap up the first day of the tournament on Friday 6-0. But they bounced back Saturday morning to beat Powell (Wyoming) 12-2 in six innings.

Gallatin Valley capped the tournament with a pair of games on Sunday, losing to Laurel 5-3 before beating Douglas (Wyoming) 3-1.

“I thought our pitchers did well the first couple days,” said Scott. “Today we struggled to throw strikes against Laurel and kind of cost us that win. I think they only had three hits and two of them were bunt base hits.”

The Outlaws scored all three of their runs in the second inning to take a 3-0 lead against Laurel. But the Dodgers took advantage of several walks in the bottom half of the frame to cut the deficit to one, and then tied the game in the third before adding two more runs in the fourth.

“I think they got three runs in one inning and didn’t have a hit because of walks and hit batters,” noted Scott. “We threw Patrick Dietz and he just struggled with command in the second inning and I think he had like four or five walks and a hit batter.”

Dietz allowed just three hits and struck out four on the mound in four innings of work, but he also surrendered eight walks.

Caleb Kamerman finished out the game on the mound, did not allow a hit, and struck out three.

“Caleb threw the last three and he threw really well,” said Scott.

Gallatin Valley scored a run in the first, third and fifth innings en route to beating Douglas. Mayson Shively tossed a 3-hitter and struck out seven for the Outlaws, while Connor Johnson and Michael Jones each had a pair of hits and an RBI to lead the offense.

In the tournament opener, Gallatin Valley was limited to just four hits by Heston Williams, who also struck out six. Gabriel Delgatty scattered eight hits en route to picking up the loss on the mound.

The Outlaws bounced back against Powell, scoring a dozen runs on just nine hits. Hunter Johnson, Michael Nehring and Delgatty each had a pair of hits offensively, and Nehring and Delgatty each belted a pair of doubles.

“Offensively I didn’t think we swung the ball very well at times. I thought we let pitchers off the hook a little bit,” said Scott. “Defensively I thought we played really well again.”

Against Powell, Scott had a little fun defensively as Connor Johnson and Dalton Mitchell each saw action on the mound for the first time in their careers. The duo combined to limit Powell to six hits.

“It was planned last year to get them on the mound down here being a wood bat tournament,” said Scott. “They’re seniors and just kind of let them go out with a little bit of a last hurrah.”

The Outlaws returned home Tuesday and swept Butte 1-0 and 14-4 in a Southern A conference doubleheader. Nehring tossed a 2-hitter and struck out nine en route to out-dueling the Miners’ Ryan Wahl on the mound in the opener.

Gallatin Valley scored the lone run in the fourth inning and Delgatty had the lone extra base hit with a triple.

In Game 2, the Outlaws rallied from a 2-0 deficit to win via the 10-run rule. A 9-run fourth inning put the contest away.

Kyle Grevious led the attack offensively, finishing 3 of 4 at the plate with a double and a home run. Delgatty added a triple, while Nehring hit a double.

Gallatin Valley (27-13, 9-1) returns to action Sunday hosting Livingston in a doubleheader, and then will host Belgrade on July 9.
