Former Manhattan Christian athlete Lois Ricardi Keller won her record sixth Montana Mile race at the 27th annual Big Sky State Games in Billings. Ricardi Keller, who now resides in Seattle, Wash., won the annual race during the opening ceremonies at Daylis Stadium Friday. She ran a rime of 4:58.15 in the 13th year of the event.
Ricardi Keller set a new record last year with a time of 4:53.9. She came into the race tied with Deer Lodge’s Nicole Hunter with five career wins.
After her high school career Ricardi Keller went on to a brilliant college career at Idaho State University(2003-08). She finished her career on the All-Time Performance List where she was fourth in the 1500 meter race with a time of 4:28.68. She’s also third in the indoor 3000 meter with a 9:43.96, fifth in the 3000 meter steeplechase with a time of 10:35.00, eighth in the indoor 5000 mete with a time of 17:42.90, and eighth in the outdoor 5000 meter with a time of 17:28.14.
Ricardi Keller recently placed 20th in the 3,000 meter steeplechase at the Olympic Trials in Eugene, Ore.
Townsend’s Chiara Warner finished second in the mile race with a time of 5:17.69.
Manhattan standout Mike Asay was leading half way through the Montana Mile before Montana State University teammate caught him to win the race. The Gillette, Wyo. native race the race in a time of 4:25.98. Asay wasn’t far behind with a time of 4:29.37. Asay’s high school teammates Brian Potter was third with a time of 4:33.82, and Tyson Vanderby fourth in a time of 4:42.83. Potter and Vanderby are 2012 graduates of Montana State- Billings.
Four-time champion Patrick Casey of Laurel was not able to make it back to defend his title.
The highlight of the opening ceremonies was former four-time gold and two-time silver Olympic medalist Olga Korbut. Korbut was in Billings Friday to light the torch and address the audience.
The former Soviet Union athlete won three golds and a silver medal in gymnastics at the 1972 Munich Olympics at the age of 17.
Korbut is now retired and living in Scottsdale, Ariz. where she does private instructions and is a motivational speaker.
