Tiger

Shayla Shea belted her team-leading sixth home run Monday afternoon as Manhattan routed Powell County to wrap up the regular season.

The Tigers, who assured themselves of the first winning season in program history over the weekend in Butte, clinched the Southern B-C Conference championship with the victory. They’ll take a 14-7 overall record into the Western B-C Divisional, which begins Friday in Anaconda.

In only the program’s second season, Manhattan finished 5-1 against league opponents and will compete in the divisional tournament for the first time.

“It just means we’re going the right way. Just want to keep building every year,” Tigers coach Randy Cygan said of the program’s progress. “Last year we had all freshmen and sophomores mostly, so we expected to get better.”

As the south’s top seed, Manhattan will begin divisional play Friday at noon. While the bracket had yet to be released, Cygan believes the Tigers have drawn Missoula Loyola, the possible No. 4 seed from the north, in the first round.

“I think we got a pretty crummy draw by finishing first in our conference because we play the fourth out of the north. And it’s going to be Loyola, which probably has the most pitching out of all the teams there,” said Cygan. “That’s alright, you got to beat them all anyhow.”

The teams did not meet during the regular season, and Manhattan enters the tournament having won seven of its past nine games.

“We want to advance to state, but it’s going to be a tough ride,” said Cygan. “Some good teams there.”

The Tigers scored five runs in the first inning against Powell County and then added six in the fourth en route to a 19-7 victory. Shea’s three-run homer during a seven run seventh stretched the lead to 16.

“We got a good lead and then we played some pretty good defense. I don’t think we scored in the second and third inning, but we made some good defensive plays,” said Cygan. “We made some good plays in the field and held them down.”

Meagan Elgas improved to 10-5 in the circle after allowing 10 hits and striking our five in the win.

The Tigers won three of their four games in Butte at the Laverne Combo Invitational. They beat Ronan 8-5, Browning 7-6, and Shelby 17-1. The lone loss was against Conrad, 6-2.

“That game could have went either way. That was a good game,” Cygan said. “We left runners on base almost every inning in scoring position.”
