Freshman Hurdler

Manhattan freshman Jackson Bloomgren competes in the 300 hurdles Saturday during the Butte Invite at Bulldog Memorial Stadium.

BUTTE — Manhattan’s track teams wrapped up the regular season Saturday at the six-team Butte Invite. It was the final regular season tune up before the two-day District 5B Meet this weekend.

The Tigers boasted a pair of winners at Bulldog Memorial Stadium, but many of the athletes did not compete in their full compliment of events. The boys placed fifth with 34 points, while the girls were fourth with 31.

Billings West and Missoula Sentinel claimed the boys and girls team titles, respectively, with 204 and 200 points.

Manhattan’s lone winner on the boys side was Cole McCloud in the high jump. The senior cleared the bar at 5-feet, 11-inches. He also placed fourth in the pole vault (12-00) and ran a leg for the mile relay team.

“Cole McCloud won the high jump,” noted Manhattan coach John Sillitti. “Not a great height but he shut it down to change shoes quickly and jump in the 4x400 with his team as the thunderstorm was blowing in.”

Colter Barney and Zak Meeker shined in the distance races. Barney posted an eight second personal best in the 1,600 (4:51.15) to place fourth, while Meeker took second in the 3,200 with a time of 10:37.73. Barney was also fifth in the 3,200 (10:57.68).

“Zak Meeker had an exciting race in the 3,200 that came down to a couple tenths of a second,” said Sillitti. “It was a solid time for the conditions.”

Manhattan’s Garrit Weeda earned a runner up finish in the triple jump (41-10), the 4x400 relay was sixth, and Kyle Hotvedt was sixth in the high jump after clearing 5-foot, 7-inches for the team’s only other top six placers.

“Several of our younger guys had PRs on the day,” noted Sillitti. “We’re not concerned right now if those guys are placing, just that they are setting new bests.”

Hannah Madsen was the lone winner for Manhattan’s girls, taking the 3,200 with a time of 12:43.95. The junior was also 13th in the 1,600 with a time of 6:11.69.

Jessa Steele and Jodi Cameron clocked in strong times in the mile as well, finishing eighth and ninth, respectively, in 5:54.57 and 5:54.64.

“Jessa Steele and Jodi Cameron ran a great 1,600,” said Sillitti. “They crossed neck-and-neck at 5:54. It was a 19-second lifetime best for Jessa and a 14-second lifetime best for Jodi.”

Other personal bests at the meet came from Hannah Boyd in the 800 (5th, 2:38.01), Ariah Carrier in the pole vault (8-feet), and Mynessa Hein in the 100 hurdles (6th, 17.55).

Low Clearance

Manhattan’s Ariah Carrier just misses trying to clear 8-feet, 6-inches on this attempt in the pole vault Saturday during the Butte Invite.

“Mynessa Hein had a good day despite not feeling well,” said Sillitti. She had a nice PR in the 100 hurdles by a few tenths and placed in both hurdles races.”

Hein was fifth in the 300 hurdles with a time of 50.31.

The Tigers’ Alexa Arthun posted a state qualifying time in the 400 (1:00.17) en route to placing second. And the sprint relay was  fourth in 52.08, while the mile relay was fifth in 4:42.14.

“The girls 4x100 relay ran a season best and state qualifying time,” said Sillitti. “It’s really nice to auto qualify a relay since there are several chances for a team to DQ at district and divisional.”

The district meet begins Friday in Bozeman at 1 p.m., and action resumes Saturday at 9 a.m.

Panthers fare well at meet in Great Falls

GREAT FALLS — Both squads placed third Saturday during a triangular hosted by Great Falls CMR, but there were plenty of strong individual performances.

Pipi Eitel and Jacob Grinwis were a double winners, and Belgrade boasted three athletes who claimed victory at the meet in Memorial Stadium.

“I thought we had a pretty good day,” longtime Belgrade girls coach Don Samuelson said. “It was pretty warm, pretty humid.”

Eitel won the 400 (59.39) and 800 (2:20.50) meter runs to help the girls tally 33 points. Helena High won the meet with 92.5 points, while Great Falls CMR finished with 55.5.

Eitel set a season best in the 400 and also helped the 4x400 relay, which included Taylor Christensen, Parker Edwins and Fallon Parker, post a time of 4:11.96.

Parker won the 300 hurdles with a time of 49.06, while Christensen earned a third place finish in the triple jump (32-04.25) and was fifth in the 400 (1:05.00).

The Panthers had several other athletes place at the meet, including freshman Tessa Lamb in the high jump, and Cynthia Smith set a personal best in the pole vault at 9-feet, 6-inches to take fourth.

“Just had a lot of other kids that ran or jumped and got their PR’s. Especially some of these young kids in the jumps, they did really well,” said Samuelson. “All-in-all, it was a good meet. Like I said, it was the second warm day we’ve had for them. It was fun to see how they responded with that.”

On the boys side, Grinwis won the 400 (50.08) and 800 (1:57.78), while Hayden Van Winkle won the long jump at 20-feet, 9-inches. Van Winkle also had a season best in the 100 (3rd, 11.37), which was a pre-qualifying time for state, and added a runner up finish in the 200 (23.03).

Van Winkle teamed up with Ethan Major, Trey Mounts and Jemal Williams to post a pre-qualifying time in the 4x100 relay in 44.44.

Mounts added a fourth place finish in the 200 (23.55), while Sawyer Degen was third in the 3,200 (10:35.18). Spencer Gordon took third in the 300 hurdles (45.39), and Belgrade eventually tallied 42 points.

Helena High won the meet with 75 points, while Great Falls CMR was second with 64.

Belgrade wraps up the regular season at the Ranger Invite in Livingston Friday at 4 p.m. Then the Panthers host the two-day Central A Divisional on May 19-20.

“We’re getting toward the end. We got that Friday night meet and then divisionals,” said Samuelson. “Right now the one’s that are healthy just need to stay healthy, and we got to start resting them up a little bit. Been working some of the kids pretty hard.”

MC wraps up regular season; district meet begins on Friday

FRENCHTOWN — Manhattan Christian’s track and field teams wrapped up the regular season Saturday with a strong performance at the Seeley-Swan Invitational.

Led by Alex Veltkamp, who won the 800 meter run, the Eagle’s girls placed seventh with 33 points. The boys were 13th with 10.5 points.

Hamilton swept the team titles with the girls tallying 74 points and the boys finishing with 75.5. Seeley-Swan’s girls were second (55), while Missoula Loyola was the runner up for the boys with 67.5 points.

Veltkamp, who is the defending State C champion in the 800, posted a winning time of 2:26.15 in the event. The junior also earned a runner up finish in the 1,600 (5:39.29).

Veltkamp is also a member of the team’s 4x100 relay team, which also includes Hailey Kassity, Faith Shepherd and Shelby Walls. The squad did not run at the meet, but heads into the postseason at the second-ranked relay in Class C behind Twin Bridges.

“We have only ran it twice with those girls, so we have some work to do regarding handoffs,” Christian girls coach Erika Kimm said. “If we can get those perfected, I can see those girls easily taking state in the 4x100.”

Walls placed third in the 400 with a time of 1:04.57, while Shepherd was fifth in the 100 (13.38). Shepherd also took sixth in the long jump (15-11) and pre-qualified for state with her mark.

The Eagles’ only other placer on the day was senior Emma Adams, who was third in the 3,200 meter run with a time of 13:10.

While she didn’t place, Kassity pre-qualified for state in the pole vault after clearing the bar at 8-feet, 6-inches.

Veltkamp and Bridget Kelly have also already pre-qualified for state. Veltkamp has posted state qualifying times in both the 400 and 800, while Kelly has posted a qualifying mark in the discus.

On the boys side, Ben Morrison and Lincoln Young placed fourth in the 3,200 and triple jump, respectively. Morrison posted a time of 10:55.87, while Young had a mark of 40-03.50.

Christian’s only other placers were Tyler Smith in the 800 (2:12.69) and Hammer Blair in the high jump (5-04).

Christian is back in action this weekend at the two-day District 11C meet in Bozeman, which will be run in conjunction with the 12C meet. Action begins Friday at 1 p.m. and resumes Saturday at 9 a.m.

“I have a lot of faith that our girls can win districts this year. With the girls staying healthy, they have all hit personal bests and many have qualified for state,” said Kimm. “We have been training them to peak at the right time, and I think that they are right on track. They know what it takes to create a team effort to win, which I think is hard to do in an individually-focused sport.”

Wolves get in final tune up before district
