The 13-game win streak was halted Sunday, but it was still a very successful weekend for the Gallatin Valley Outlaws at the Big Stick Tournament in Rapid City, S.D.

The Outlaws won four of their six games at the four-day tournament with both losses coming on the final day. Longtime coach Duwayne Scott opted to save arms and rest several veterans with a busy week of conference games ahead for Gallatin Valley this week.

“We took most of our offensive punch out in that second game to give some younger guys an opportunity to prove themselves,” said Scott. “And also to rest some other guys that have pretty much played every inning of every game so far.”

Gallatin Valley’s win streak was snapped by the Billings Blue Jays in a 16-4 loss Sunday morning. Then the Outlaws lost to Cody (Wyoming), 6-0, to cap the tournament.

“I’m pretty happy with where we’re at, especially with pitching and offensively,” said Scott. “I thought we swung the bat pretty good even in the two losses. But the Blue Jays made every play defensively and then we just struggled on the mound against Cody. We just hit everything right at them and we couldn’t get anything going.”

The Outlaws began the tournament Thursday with a 9-1 victory against the Post 22 Bullets, and then an 8-0 win against Premier West. On Friday they routed the Post 22 Expos 14-4, and then beat the Post 22 Bullets again Saturday, 13-1.

Hunter Johnson had a big weekend at the plate, finishing 5 for 5 with a pair of doubles and a triple in Thursday’s win against the Bullets. Then he went 3 for 3 with a double against Premier West en route to bating .700 (14 of 20) in the tournament with six doubles and a triple.

“He actually had a really good weekend offensively,” said Scott. “And so did Michael Nehring, and Isaac Richardson again had a really good weekend as well offensively.”

Nehring saw action in five games, batting .500 (8 of 16) with a pair of doubles, while Richardson also batted .500 (8 of 16) with four doubles and a triple in five games. Nehring also scattered four hits and struck out six on the mound in leading Gallatin Valley to victory against Premier West.

The Outlaws’ pitchers shined in the first four games — they only allowed more than five hits in one of those contests — but ran out of steam on Sunday.

“Pitchers fell behind hitters and those teams made us pay the price with that,” said Scott.

Gallatin Valley bounced back Tuesday with a Southern A sweep on the road against Dillon. The Outlaws hit four doubles and a triple en route to a 12-5 victory in the opener and then routed the Cubs 16-1 in five innings in Game 2.

Connor Johnson was 2 for 4 with the triple, while Dalton Mitchell finished 3 for 5 at the plate with a double in Game 1. Gabriel Delgatty, Nehring and Richardson added doubles, and Nehring hit a triple in Game 2.

On Wednesday, Gallatin Valley (23-11, 7-1) swept a conference doubleheader at Livingston. The Outlaws rallied to win the first game 5-2, and then routed the Braves in the second 17-2.

Gallatin Valley is back in action this weekend at a three-day tournament in Cody, Wyo.
